Signs You've Got a Rodent Problem

Droppings are usually the first clue, rat droppings look like a large grain of rice, mice leave smaller, thinner ones. Scratching in walls or the loft, especially at night, is another common sign. Gnaw marks on skirting, wiring, or stored food, and a faint ammonia smell in enclosed spaces, round out the usual list. Squirrels tend to announce themselves more obviously, loud movement in the loft during the day, since they're active when rats and mice generally aren't.

Why It Doesn't Just Go Away on Its Own

Rats and mice breed fast, and a small number in a cavity wall becomes a much bigger number within weeks. They also learn quickly, which is why DIY bait sometimes stops working after the first round, survivors get wise to it. Squirrels cause a different kind of damage, chewed timber, damaged insulation, and in older properties they can get into loft spaces through gaps that look too small to matter.

Treating What's There Is the Easy Part

Any competent technician can bait a rat run. The actual job is working out how it got in, a cracked airbrick, a gap round a soil pipe, bins left open two doors down, and closing that off. Otherwise you're doing this again at Christmas.

Rat, Mouse & Squirrel FAQs

How do I tell rats from mice?

Droppings, mostly. Rat droppings look like a grain of rice, or bigger. Mice leave smaller, thinner ones. Rats also chew bigger holes and stick to the same routes, mice can squeeze through almost anything.

Is this dangerous for my kids or pets?

We use products approved for domestic properties and lock everything away in bait stations your dog can't get into. Flag it if you've got pets or little ones so we can plan around it.

What if it doesn't work the first time?

Most jobs include a follow-up if needed, rats especially can get wise to bait fast.

We're having building work done, could that stir things up?

Very likely. Knocking through walls or clearing an overgrown garden tends to send existing rodents looking for a new home, sometimes yours. Worth getting a check done before the builders start.

Are squirrels treated differently to rats and mice?

Broadly similar principle, proofing entry points, but squirrel access is often at roof level rather than ground level, so the survey focuses there.

My landlord won't deal with a rat problem, can I make him?

Depends on the cause. If it's coming in through a hole in the brickwork, that's on him under housing regs. If it's more of a "bin bags left outside" situation, that's a different conversation. Worth checking your tenancy agreement.
